Madrid launches major transformation of Gran Vía del Sureste

Madrid is beginning a major transformation of the Gran Vía del Sureste in Ensanche de Vallecas, turning the existing underused area into a new pedestrian boulevard covering more than 21,000 m².

Construction begins this September with an investment of €13.1 million and is expected to be completed by spring 2028. The project covers the section between Avenida de las Suertes and the roundabout near the A-3.

The new boulevard will measure approximately 560 metres long and 37.6 metres wide, incorporating pedestrian areas, leisure and relaxation spaces, children’s playgrounds, outdoor fitness and calisthenics areas, as well as a 180 m² ornamental fountain with water features and integrated lighting.

Sustainability will play a central role in the redevelopment, with 875 new trees, landscaped areas, additional shade and measures designed to increase biodiversity. Dedicated cycle lanes will also be introduced alongside improvements for pedestrians and public transport, including exclusive lanes for the future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

The project is also the starting point for a much larger 16-kilometre green corridor planned to connect Madrid’s major southeastern developments, including Valdecarros, Ensanche de Vallecas, Los Berrocales, Los Ahijones, El Cañaveral and Los Cerros.

Madrid City Council has compared the future importance of this new urban axis to the role that Paseo de la Castellanaplays in central Madrid, highlighting the scale of the transformation taking place across the capital’s rapidly developing southeast.
